About Dr. Syed Adnan

From forestry to remote sensing, GIS and LiDAR - a research and professional journey focused on understanding forests through geospatial data and technology.

A Journey from Forestry to Geospatial Science

Dr. Syed Adnan's academic and professional path combines his foundation in forestry with advanced training and experience in remote sensing, GIS, LiDAR and forest science.

Where It Started

Dr. Adnan's interest in remote sensing and GIS developed after completing his undergraduate studies in Forestry in Pakistan.

His forestry background provided a foundation for understanding forest ecosystems, natural resources and field-based assessment. During this period, he became increasingly interested in how geospatial technologies could be used to observe, measure and analyse forests over larger areas.

This interest led him to pursue a Master's degree in Remote Sensing and GIS at the National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Pakistan. The transition from traditional forestry towards remote sensing and geospatial analysis became an important step in his subsequent academic and research career.

The combination of forestry knowledge and geospatial technology has remained a central theme throughout Dr. Adnan's academic and professional work.
Academic milestone

Doctoral Research at UEF

Developing expertise in forest structure, LiDAR and aboveground biomass

Dr. Adnan completed his Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Forestry at the School of Forest Sciences, University of Eastern Finland in 2020.

His doctoral dissertation, Improvements in forest structural type assessment using airborne laser scanning , focused on assessing forest attributes, particularly forest structure and aboveground biomass, using airborne laser scanning (ALS/LiDAR).

This research established a strong foundation for his subsequent work in three-dimensional remote sensing, forest inventory, quantitative modelling and the use of LiDAR-derived information for forest assessment.

During his doctoral studies, he also worked as a visiting researcher at the Forest Ecology and Conservation research group at the University of Cambridge, UK.
